From naive promises to wistful memories to jealous minds, young love can really run the gamut of high highs and low lows. And the music that communicates those emotions is equally varied. Throw together pop polish, a guest rap verse, and a mellotron and that will give you a decent idea of what to expect on Young & In Love (LMTL-028).
“We’re Gonna Be Always” is an optimistic pop track featuring a soaring female vocal, dynamic breakdown and bridge, and orchestral strings that provide a dramatic and insistent backdrop. It’s sweet without being saccharine, sincere without being too melodramatic, but dramatic enough to fit in with any teen story on the CW or a Hallmark Christmas movie.
Cue the big pop ballad with boy band-member-gone-solo lead vocals. The smooth delivery masks the seduction, keeping it PG enough so no dads will raise an eyebrow. Verse three brings out the fast rhymes of rapper Sharrod Sloans, amplifying the pace and emotions to a new level.
This leads to the retro, brit-pop sounds of “Last Summer.” The aforementioned mellotron appears alongside earnest male lead with layers of backing vocals. Mid-tempo, melodic, and romantic, this one has an indie vibe that takes away a little bit of the shine, but leaves all the hooks.
But it’s not all bright colors & sunshine. The dark, anthemic “Die For Love” turns up the energy, but definitely lets the jealous boyfriend loose. Driving electro pop with a driving four on the floor beat, this was made for retaliatory partying, angry tears in the rain, and all sorts of no good.
