Virtual Crate Digging: Equilibrium
Folks are always asking about what’s new and upcoming but, as shown by the vital and venerable culture of crate digging, looking backwards can also yield unexpected results and reveal hidden gems. And boy oh boy do we have some hidden gems. Let’s dig through our virtual bins of vinyl and see what we find.
Going Beyond Epic Expectations
Of all of our 10 labels of production music, the practical applications of Picture Puncture are unmistakable. It’s a label full of powerful soundtrack scores and custom sound design intended for the big screen, video games, and everything epic. But the constraints of trailer music have fueled our creative spirit, resulting in a pair of albums that are jam packed with impact. So while the adventures in Virtual Crate Digging usually focus on a single album, it wouldn’t be right to talk about one of these without the other.
Welcome to the world of Equilibrium.
First, the OG… The Equilibrium Anthology (PICX-005). On the surface it appears to be a cinematic album of big brass, dramatic non-lyrical choirs, and swelling strings. Listen for a few beats and you’ll quickly hear electronic elements and effects sweeping in, accenting the action. But that’s just the beginning. With each track labeled as either SETUP, PAYOFF, or REMIX, the options for dynamic storytelling with thematically compatible workparts exponentially increase.
Here’s where things get really interesting. What happens when you take the biggest moments of The Equilibrium Anthology and fuse them together with hip-hop? Our composers treated those original tracks as their private collection of samples, using those epic themes as larger than life inspiration for the completely new tracks of The Equilibrium Remixes (PICX-008). Featuring big earworm hooks and energized rap verses, these remixes are not only thematically linked to their source audio, but each track description lists which tracks from Anthology were used.
The Equilibrium Anthology and The Equilibrium Remixes are a dynamic duo that work perfectly for not only action/sci-fi trailers, but pumped up sports promos, video games, advertising, event marketing and live-streaming. All of this adds up to larger than life sonic moments with a massive toolbox full of options.
