Home means different things to different people. Sometimes it’s where you grew up, sometimes it’s where you rest your head each night, sometimes it’s just a feeling. But it all centers around comfort, togetherness, and often complicated emotions.
We assembled composers Ehren Ebbage (Lizzy McAlpine), Tyler Fortier (Jeffrey Martin, Anna Tivel), and Alec Shaw (Zan Fiskum) to bring all of that together in Under One Roof v2 (UND-57). Warm, atmospheric, organic sounds create soft vignettes to underscore moments of reflection and memory.
The dynamic builds found throughout the record vary from gentle lifts to more dramatic crescendos. And as with all UNDERscore releases, each track ends with the musical equivalent of a question mark. In the case of this collection, they can feel like unresolved conversations or faded memories. Modern folk instruments are the primary driver, utilizing light synthesizers for spacious and opaque textures.
“We Lift Each Other” features a piano theme, creating a mix of melancholy, confidence, and hope while marching forward. Acoustic guitars lead the way on “When Friends Are Family” along with light percussion touches that evolve into an easy sense of movement and motion.
Under One Roof v2 is sonically uniform enough to serve as a soundtrack for your next favorite “friends and family” drama, but with plenty of flavors for each character’s unique relationships.
