Let's Settle The UNDERscore

The License Lab is not your usual corporate, standard, run-of-the-mill, production music superstore. And that’s precisely the way we designed it and like it. So while our catalog does not have everything for everyone, what we do have will surprise and delight your eardrums. This article is part of a series that takes a look at each of our meticulously curated labels to show you what they’re all about.

consistent rise to cliffhanger ending and editable stingers

single mood tracks that engage your audience without shifts in tone or tempo

breaks the mold of the traditional structural arc of production music

There’s a line in the Rocky Horror Picture Show where Dr. Frank N. Furter teases the innocent Brad and Janet, saying “I see you shiver with antici…” He waits, flashes those signature Tim Curry wide eyes, and finally finishes with “pation.”

That moment of “what comes next” is something that our UNDERscore label has at the end of every track. The abrupt cliffhanger, the promise of something around the corner, the setup for the comeback.

Most production music has historically been constructed as “songs without bridges,” an A section that gives way to a B section, rinse and repeat.

We noticed something before we launched our first label… most editors to that point had been using just one of those sections in their video productions. They never even used the B section or chorus. Or if they did, they skipped the A section. And they had to work around a Big Obvious Ending that didn't always help for the way they actually use music.

But what if there was a label of production music built of nothing but A sections?

Each UNDERscore track is specially structured with an intentional and consistent overall build, followed by a musical question mark—a jumping off point that leaves the audience wanting more (with musically-related exclamation point stingers you can drop in to give you even more flexibility). Just look at the waveforms and you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about.

Additionally, there are alternate mixes and 30-second promo edits for virtually the entire series. Plus stems. All of the options.

All of the energy and grime of indie rock, riddled with untameable overdrive and infectious rhythms, but with the edit-friendly formula of the UNDERscore label. You get the best of both worlds with the freeform rebellious edge of garage rockers and easy edit points and clear, defined sections. We crank the attitude up to 11 while keeping the train on the tracks... just barely.
