Indie Appetizers
spacious, emotive, personal, worktapes (3ING-074)
As most songwriters know, a lot goes into a song before the world hears it. But what do you discover when you truly listen and dive deeper? You’ll likely find worktapes: musical ideas that are less than full songs but more than nuggets, containing an undiscovered bounty of spacious and emotive indie gold.
Indie Appetizers (3ING-074) utilizes stark indie folk instrumentation to explore moods, chord progressions, and panoramic emotional territory. Composer Christopher Porterfield (Field Report, DeYarmond Edison) has delivered an intimate record of worktapes with shades of darkness, hope, and peace. Post-production augmentation enhances these moods by celebrating the noise and raw bits, evidence of the freedom that comes with exploring new musical spaces.
Rhythmic, close-miked acoustic guitar and random synth bloops create a dreamy and slightly melancholy environment on “In The Tactile Bits” while warm synth pads back hopeful guitars and dulcimers that keep us grounded on “Slow Drive Back Home.” You’ll also find two tracks that share form and title. Separate leads, acoustic guitar and dulcimer respectively, from the “Thoughts On Forms” pair showcase how much can change with a simple shift of melody and direction.
Drone footage, nature documentaries, and reflective scenes in human dramas are all easy landing spots for our take on the unexpected emotional impact of simple, intimate indie worktapes.
