And boy oh boy do we have some hidden gems. Let’s dig through our virtual bins of vinyl and see what we find.
Follow The Delightfully Dirty Path
Filthy and grimy aren’t usually favorable terms. But if you’re looking for something with a bit of an edge to match the attitude of the story you’re telling, they can be lifesavers.
Diverging from a world of clean cut samples and shiny synths can (in the right hands) lead you to far more interesting places. To go down one of these delightful dirty paths, I’d like to share with you a hidden gem simply called Turntablism (HK-08).
As part of our HypeKit label, this album goes toe to toe with the best of the swaggerific offerings. It blurs the lines between genres like trip-hop, hip-hop, and turntablism, ultimately resulting in 20 tracks that are sample-based (our own, zero clearance issues!), funky as hell, and dramatic.
The cuts on Turntablism can be used for a variety of music searches and applications. With a repeating Nile Rodgers-esque guitar sample at the forefront, a track like “Needle Technique” could easily find a home with a spot looking for a 70s funk vibe with a modern edge or vice versa. The full version has plenty of breaks for easy edits and its semi-frantic pace makes for a compelling companion to the right spot.
There are so many thematic directions this style can go, but dramatic action shot sequences are near the top of the list. “Illicit Sugars” strays away from the distinctive crate-digging inspired samples and takes a more modern approach, fueled by a fuzzy synth and beat that stutter and skip with intentional excitation.
From dramatic crime sequences to energetic lifestyle promos, Turntablism has just enough of that edge, dirt, filth to accent the subtleties of your story. Bombastic sampled brass and laid back stoner beats also lay hidden in the depths of this record. No need to clean off your dusty fingers when you pick this one out of the virtual bins.
