Indie Folk Pop
Emotional and driving indie folk pop. Acoustic guitars, earnest vocalizations, inspiring crescendos, and lively percussion for youthful, adventurous stories that move. (E&E-032)
When wanderlust hits, it hits hard. That nagging feeling that you have to move, to change, to go… somewhere. It becomes an insatiable hunger that you can’t ignore and eventually have to feed.
Who knows, taking a few stir-crazy steps out the door could lead to something truly great and unexpected.
Indie Folk Pop (E&E-032) is a soundtrack for moments of introspective adventure that accompany those stories. We brought back the trio of composers from Fragile Indie Folk (E&E-031) to deliver a driving sequel to those intimate sketches. Ehren Ebbage, Tyler Fortier, Christopher Porterfield (Field Report, DeYarmond Edison with Justin Vernon) capture the natural, freeing, gentle yet energetic side of the genre and create dynamic arrangements that are laced with emotion.
Earnest, non-lyrical vocalizations from Alec Shaw (Zan Fiskum) amplify those emotions throughout most of the album. The layers of falsetto harmonies and feel-good “whoas” act like additional textures that heighten the organic qualities of the music, bringing out a yearning and youthful abandon.
Compelling drums and percussion from Jason McGerr (Death Cab For Cutie, The Overstory, Tegan and Sara, Matt Nathanson) and bass by Allee Fütterer (Mayer Hawthorne, The Astronots) also accent the shifts in mood that are found on tracks like “Barnside Story.” An atmospheric opening and a melancholy piano bridge meld perfectly with inspiring melodies, folk stomps and hand claps, and a joyous release, beautifully embodying the highs and lows of the story you’re telling.
Emotional dramas and technology companies alike often make use of the journey/adventure motif, and this album ticks a lot of the boxes to add dynamics, depth, and dimension to those stories. It’s easy to picture a car driving through the wooded mountain highways of Appalachia or the PNW, whether that be for a commercial demonstrating the best mobile network in the country, or a Netflix coming-of-age drama where the lead character is taking a trip to find/escape themselves.
Fans of the Wisconsin folk music scene (Bon Iver, Volcano Choir, Field Report) as well as folk-revival giants like Lumineers and Marcus Mumford will dig this record. We sure do.
