Upscale heist vibes on seductive beats with guitar (DAA-027)
Have you ever watched a movie on mute but still knew exactly what’s happening or felt the impact of an actor’s emotional performance? That same effect holds true when vocals are removed from compelling music. The urgency of UK Drill is much deeper than the delivery of ferocious rap verses. Mute the lyrics and the genre’s tenacity comes through via bold beats and ominous synth textures.
On Drill & Chill (DAA-027) we took the components and inherent energy behind UK Drill and infused it with seductive beats and guitar. The result is an album with tracks as harsh as the original inspiration, bold and tenacious trap that live for the thrill of the chase. And on the other side of the coin are mellow, sensual textures that make for an alluring combination when set over urgent 808s.
You feel the nervous anticipation in “Drop Drop Drip” as electric piano lines tiptoe up and down while an 808 fuels the tension by dropping in and out of the mix. Playing on the darker side of the album, this track feels like a prelude to something sinister. “Rum And Roommates'' still echoes the foreboding vibes from other tracks on Drill & Chill, but the acoustic guitar adds a dramatic flair that is much more cerebral than criminal. Minor guitar arpeggios are employed on several tracks which provide a tactile, organic and somewhat exotic contrast to dark synths and rhythms. But it’s not all cloudy skies and tinted windows. “Luxurious Lifestyle” has poolside vibes that certainly slows things down, similar to the mellow and dusty Lo-Fi Beats (E&E-035).
The relatively minimal instrumentation on the album takes its cue from the beats. They play off each other to become more than the sum of their parts and accentuate the core emotion of stories with multiple angles. Drill & Chill can work for several types of TV or film sync opportunities including human drama and psychological thrillers, or lifestyle brands and even the ever-popular virtual realtor house tours, depending on which side of the coin you land on.
