Being in a flow state is more than just being “in the zone.” There are elements of peace, clarity, and unconscious movement that bring us to the immersive phenomenon where time is irrelevant and potential is unleashed. Do not confuse it with productivity or results, the flow state is not dependent on success or failure. It is about being in the moment and embracing it. And whether we know it or not, when we create playlists for studying, yoga, or jamming through spreadsheets, we’re utilizing music to tap into the elusive flow state.
By bringing together dusty beats and elements of jazz and R&B, we come one step closer to finding our flow with Lo-Fi Beats (E&E-035). Synths and pianos play dreamy chords while tactile beats keep balance and find a middle ground between the clouds and the ground. Like many albums on our Eyeballs & Eardrums label, the grit and noise of tape is intentionally left in on this record to add depth and flavor to these already rich tracks.
The team of composers Julian Anderson, Forrest Reed, and Aaron Wittrock smoothly apply the distinctive warble of old pianos and the occasional non-lyrical vocal to help create an atmosphere that is more present than ambient, more free than chill-hop, more jazzy than funky, taking elements of each to find a distinctly warm, floating sound.
Each lo-fi album or playlist has its own personality (or at least should). Ours exists at the intersection of luxurious hotel pools and youthful explorations of the heart and mind. That dichotomy allows Lo-Fi Beats to occupy a place for daydreaming, relaxation, intuition and emotion with an expansive list of potential applications.
