Daisy Chain (Single)

Bridging the gap between the dark and the light, producer HOLTERGEIST and singer-songwriter Amanda Huff explore an intriguing alternative pop setting for a futuristic war of identity. (LMTL-046)

As listeners, we often search for parallels, for previously established reference points to make sense of what we’re hearing. Our minds naturally look for patterns. But when two songs share a sonic connection that goes beyond the surface, it creates a mystifying effect that breaks free of any/all boxes. This second collaboration between producer HOLTERGEIST and singer-songwriter Amanda Huff continues where the duo left off, exploring uncharted waters beyond the borders of Carbon Copy (LMTL-042).

“If Carbon Copy was the recognition of an internal division, Daisy Chain is the confrontation between those parts,” shares Huff. She goes on to describe the pair as “sequential chapters in an ever-waging war of identity… the daisy chain ultimately signifying the inescapable unity between personas.”

Daisy Chain (LMTL-046) begins with a slow, surreal crescendo that primes the senses for an alt pop lucid dream. Steady bass and drums keep one foot on the merry-go-round as layers of guitar and Huff’s hypnotic vocals deepen the dreamy atmosphere.

When describing the narrative of the song, the songwriter shares:

“Self-perception is as cyclical as it is fluid, and so I felt it important to focus the concept around the former rather than chasing any type of conclusive direction. I think sometimes we forget to acknowledge how much humility it takes to hold hands with the darker parts of ourselves, and so this song is definitely an ode to that process.”

This is especially evident in the first lyrics of “Daisy Chain”:

Underneath your many veils
I thought I caught a grin
You strung together flowers
But I felt the thorns within

Daisy-chained your angels
So their light could be contained
Then wore them like a weapon
When your ego was at stake

I saw through you
My eyes, your view
I saw through you
Your eyes, my view

Amanda Huff’s soft, ethereal harmonies are unexpectedly joined by a massive proclamation from Chicago-based saxophonist Nick Zoulek. The wailing sax solo triggers the charging drums and bass with renewed drive as the final statements and shifts are made amidst vocal chants. Fans of the pioneering pop production of visionaries like Kate Bush and Bjork won’t hesitate to follow HOLTERGEIST and Huff into the mysterious cloud of Daisy Chain. You might find yourself in the orbit of a distant sci-fi galaxy or between the shadows and cyberspace of modern spy thrillers. Or perhaps something that doesn’t fit a box at all.
