Barbaric Drama

Epic drums, brass hits, and ancient flutes score a new story of a reluctant hero and unknown evil (MOPM-086)

It’s no secret that the classic samurai films of visionaries like Akira Kurosawa inspired generations of filmmakers, including the spaghetti westerns of the 1960s. Combined with the world of the wild west, samurai and cowboy alike have served as the inspiration for space pirates and mystic space wizards.

Now we see those sci-fi characters returning to their samurai/gunslinger roots. The circle of life.

This melting pot of influences and genre-blending storytelling have created an opportunity to construct a new type of soundtrack with Barbaric Drama (MOPM-086). The rules are out the window (or airlock?) and epic trailer toms combine with medieval flutes while theremins and bold brass bring out the darkness. Composers Sam Ecoff, Brandon Mathieus, Evan Conway have delivered a dynamic score with a vast array of adventurous options.

And, as with all Modus Operandi albums, the building blocks are all there to create long edits with multiple sets of tracks sharing the same key, tempo, and feel.

“Desolate Worlds” begins with an unsettling and ominous theremin line over steady synths. The orchestral elements seamlessly enter halfway through as the suspense builds in this brooding track. Try pairing it with the tense “Stand Off Stand In” and the dark and twisted “Residual Evil.” These three companion tracks combine elements of horror, sci-fi, and adventure by balancing synthetic and organic instrumentation.

But of course no gunslinger adventure would be complete without an anthem that hints at the potential glory and possibilities that await our reluctant hero. “Rise Of The Anti Hero” brings everything together in a powerful, insistent, and dramatic theme that harkens back to big western soundtracks.

There’s more than one reason why these stories and influences continue to resonate with new audiences. And with storytellers no longer completely bound to big box office expectations, they can be free to explore whatever world their mind creates. Whether it’s a trailer for a video game set in feudal Japan, a limited series featuring a new gunslinger from the wild west, a full feature in a far away galaxy, or some combination we haven’t seen yet, start with the sounds of Barbaric Drama and see where this new journey takes you.
