On the first volume of Modern Country, we presented boot-stomping anthems for big stages and truck commercials. This time we’ve taken a different approach that leans more towards the introspective, but is still full of confidence and today’s pop country textures.

Modern Country vol. 2 (OSPK-083) delivers a brilliant balance of shiny pop production and hooks, uplifting modern Nashville sounds, and just a pinch of that signature country twang.

Composers Timothy Marks (Taylor Swift, Luke Combs, Jewel) and Samuel Hunter (Willie Nelson, George Strait, Amy Grant, Luke Bryan) wrote tracks that can crossover into the pop stratosphere while retaining the feel of today’s wide-ranging country landscape. With keyboard and percussion overdubs from album producer Daniel Holter (Ryan Necci and the Buffalo Gospel, Field Report, Dead Horses) and more percussion and live drums by Sean Lane (Ann Wilson, Perfume Genius, Noah Gundersen, Pedro The Lion) at Seattle’s legendary Studio X, that landscape grew nearly as wide as the country itself.

“How To Save Yourself” features electronic-heavy verses on this catchy, dynamic, and determined track. The guitars and drums propel the song forward and find the sweet spot between modern country and pop rock. Plenty of builds and breaks punctuate the memorable lead lines and hopeful feelings.

If you’re looking for the playful and fun side of modern country, “Undeniable” has got the goods. The repetitive hook hits on acoustic guitar first before soulful organ, full drums, and banjo enter to crank things up. Instruments fly in and out, with tasty fills that keep the good feelings going. You only need to listen for a few seconds before this (dare we say...undeniable?) track takes hold.

No matter how far away modern country strays from the traditional honky-tonk sounds, the free and driving country spirit will always tie them together. From teen drama and road movies to travel and fishing/hunting programing, Modern Country vol. 2 is here when you need the slick and radio-ready sounds of Nashville. Fans of country music stars like Hunter Hayes, Keith Urban, and Kacey Musgraves will want to give this album an honest listen.
