Tell Me Where You Wanna Go (EP)

Futuristic anarchy meets the dance floor, featuring playful vocoders and unpredictable beats in a menacing dark pop cocktail of chaos. (LMTL-047)

Welcome to a dark and digital realm where synths swirl around your ears like fog, as vaguely human voices surface with mechanical enhancements, and electronic rhythms keep you on your toes while dancing the night away.

Tell Me Where You Wanna Go (LMTL-047) is a tantalizing, futuristic soundtrack that draws in unsuspecting listeners into a dynamic web of mystery. Kory Burrell (of Dogwood Last) flexes his electronic muscles on this release, bringing his talent for textural synths and curious sounds to a darker side of alternative pop.

This EP features varying levels of vocal effects that match the quirky characteristics of each of the four tracks. While vocoder-style effects are heavily employed, lyrics and hooks ride the line between lead and supporting roles. Sometimes each word is crisp and audible, sometimes they drift back into the ether. It’s yet another element of this suspenseful and strange release that makes it so compelling.

The liminal space between real and manipulated voice, and the degrees between zero and maximum processing are all really interesting.

When asked about the role of vocals on this record, Burrell explains :

“In some moments, manipulation is used limitedly as a tactful production technique (for layering vocals, for example). In other moments, it’s meant to totally transform the voice to the point of being completely unidentifiable as my own. The liminal space between real and manipulated voice, and the degrees between zero and maximum processing are all really interesting. It’s fun to play with the auditory ‘uncanny valley’ experience we have when we hear the voice presented in these ways.”

For music supervisors and editors that look to utilize select portions of a vocal performance or simply enjoy the dreamy synths and mechanical beats, full stems and alternate versions are available for each track.

Tell Me Where You Wanna Go is an appropriate title for a release that has such varied applications and influences. “Much of the mood of this EP was influenced by New York night life,” shares Burrell. “I’ve been spending some time with a handful of local DJ’s here in Brooklyn lately. And the intersection of Euro-house, hyperpop, Y2K aesthetic, and anti-pop woven in to the scene and sound right now has been seeping into my productions.”

Whether it be part of the soundtrack to a superhero drama like Black Lightning, scoring sci-fi dystopian worlds, or accenting the air of luxury in a high-end advertisement, all you need to do is push play and find a destination.
