Believe: Clearing Ted Lasso
(3 min read)
When did you first hear about Ted Lasso?
Maybe you saw it on the top of your Apple TV menu with images of soccer uniforms and a very prominent moustache. Maybe a friend gushed about the show after binging the series in a weekend. Maybe it was when Jason Sudeikis wore a hoodie and gave a clearly unprepared speech after winning the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy TV Series for the titular role. Maybe you saw something about ‘be a goldfish’ and wondered what that was all about.
Or maybe you watched it right away and knew from the start Ted Lasso is something special.
Because it is.
Here’s our completely spoiler-free summary: Ted Lasso is the story of an American college football coach who is recruited to become the coach (or manager, if you will) of a Premier League football (soccer for the uninitiated) team. Ted is unwaveringly positive and kind, seemingly naive, and full of folksy sayings from the “always look on the bright side” playbook. He’s out of his depth, knowing virtually nothing about soccer, and pretty much everyone wants him to fail. But maybe he can turn the failing team around before they are relegated and lose their prestigious Premier League status.
It’s also so much more.
Launched in 2020, the show is a source of pure positivity and That Heart Stuff that rarely exists in this world, let alone on a TV series streaming on Apple TV +. And, as with some of the best shows and films, the music plays a key role. It deepens the already incredible performances of the actors and the brilliant writing. The show’s music supervision team of Tony Von Pervieux and Christa Miller recently were featured on Nerdist, sharing the story of how one of the most impactful musical moments of the show nearly never happened due to a denied clearance request.
We highly encourage you to binge the show, if you haven’t already, before Season 2 starts on July 23, read the article (it has some spoilers), and join us in our Ted Lasso fandom.
