Sentimental Skies

An atmospheric indie folk score to match the emotions, drama, and journey of a youthful heart, featuring non-lyrical vocalizations, vibraphone, acoustic guitars and strings. (E&E-034)

While pop music placements in TV and film are nothing new, the increased use of indie folk scores has helped them to jump from low budget Sundance hopefuls to the mainstream.

When the right elements are added to an indie folk cut, it is elevated into something new that combines the drama of an orchestral score with the raw and organic nature of bedroom recordings. Composers Tyler Fortier (Jeffrey Martin, Anna Tivel), Alec Shaw (Zan Fiskum), and Devin Drobka (Bell Dance Songs, Field Report) have brought that level of intimate, dynamic storytelling to life with Sentimental Skies (E&E-034).

Starting with largely acoustic instrumentation and sparse percussion, vibraphone adds a spellbinding warmth to tracks like “Blurring Our Memories” and “The Weight Of It All.” Alec Shaw’s haunting falsetto is found throughout the album, accentuating melancholy and joy alike with non-lyrical melodies and harmonies. Also featured are passionate strings, atmospheric keyboards, and what indie folk soundtrack would be complete without a little banjo?

As more coming of age stories are being shared from new perspectives, the music must reflect the complicated emotions of those characters and their struggles. The poignant musical brushstrokes of Sentimental Skies bring deeper dimension to teen dramas, road movies, romantic storylines, or even nature documentaries, connecting each seemingly disparate story with our universal human experience.
