Banjo Evergreens
rustic, twang, outdoors, folksy (3ING-078)
When writing about our releases on our Three Ingredients Or Less label, we often cite the unique qualities of the featured instruments. Sometimes we highlight the range of an underutilized instrument in releases like Bass a La Carte (3ING-073) or Liquid Layers (3ING-071). On others, we let the instrument do the talking with recognizable or popular styles on releases like Island Delights (3ING-059) or Raw Drawbars (3ING-072). With this album, we’ve done a little bit of both.
From bright bluegrass duos to pensive solo melodies, Banjo Evergreens (3ING-078) conveys a wide spectrum of emotions. Though banjo strings can be playful and spritely, they can walk a dark and dusty road just as easily. Composer Philippe Bronchtein shows how the instrument is always right at home in Appalachia, but can also easily cross genre lines into a more atmospheric space all while feeling authentic and true to the banjo.
Going beyond the many characteristics we’ve already listed, experience a softer side of the banjo on “Corn Maze.” It’s a warm and inviting track centered around a lively picking pattern, accompanied by acoustic guitar with a folksy feel. “Storms A Brewin” hits the darker notes with a mysterious solo banjo. Using the space between the sound as another instrument, distant synth drone treatments help with a slight crescendo at the end. We’d be remiss not to mention one of the fun, rambunctious tracks like “White Water Runnin.” It’s what you probably picture when someone mentions banjo, perfect for anything to do with fishing or hunting and full of energy.
With such a rich variety on Banjo Evergreens, we recommend letting your story’s keywords and emotional landscape dictate the path. No matter if you need the tried and true bluegrass banjo, or you want to lean on the other unique sonic properties of the instrument, the banjo remains evergreen.
