A Disarming Transformation

The tools of war and art rarely meet. While one instigates destruction and violence, the other seeks to heal and build. But Mexico City-based visual artist Pedro Reyes has found a way to combine these tools and make something beautiful.

“I believe that the purpose of art is to come up with ways to transform the most negative instincts into creative instincts.”

That mentality is directly in line with how so many of us create music. We can channel our sadness, pain, anger into songs, transforming those emotions and negative instincts into art. Reyes literally takes the concept to a new level by using seized and decommissioned weapons and turning them into instruments. He redeems them and gives them new purpose. The result is his most recent piece called “Disarm” and it is absolutely inspiring.

Take a look at this feature from Vice on how the art was conceived and created by working with the team of musicians at Cocolab.
