Bedroom Pop

Wistfully romantic, wildly carefree, sweet vocal melodies and lush harmonies combine with unexpected indie combinations. (E&E-039)

Where music is made can dictate the direction of the music itself. Coffee shop musicians can fade into the background, buskers naturally play and sing louder not only to be heard, but to be noticed. And when a musician is recording in their bedroom, the performances and the lyrics tend to reflect the intimate nature of that space. It’s one of the only places we let our guard down. Sometimes that process yields barebones, raw recordings, but it can also produce hook-laden pop with sincerity and shine. This record is full of the latter.

There’s nothing to hide in Bedroom Pop (E&E-039) as dreamy, tender indie-inspired tracks balance pop synths and warbly guitars with charming vocal hooks. While flirting with cliche, this album never crosses that line. Instead, the universality of the vocals creates an ease of entry, staying sweet and endearing with lyrics that share young hopes of some easy-going, romantic adventures.

The Seattle-based team of Julian Anderson, Forrest Reed, and Aaron Wittrock continues to deliver pop songs that find the sweet spot within niche genres. On this release the composers explore daydream possibilities through bedroom variations of subgenres like lo-fi pop, acoustic pop, pop rock, and indie pop. Previously crafting releases like Lo-Fi Beats, Luxe Synths, and Emotional Pop, they create modern production music that lives in emotionally rich territory while staying purpose-built for practical applications like teen dramas, cosmetic and fashion ads, and travel series.

Bedroom Pop hits on the optimistic side with the low-key beach vibes of “Malibu” and the confident pop rock tune “Let’s Just Leave Tonight.” There’s even a track with a whistle melody dedicated to the furry and pawed “Best Friends” in our lives. Just read through the track titles and the themes of nostalgia, cheerful innocence, young love, and even a little slacker attitude come through loud and clear.

Because when recording in your bedroom, there’s no need to hide and no need to try to make these songs anything more than what they are: sincere, sentimental, and fun Bedroom Pop.
