When you put on Father Sky’s self-titled debut record, you may find yourself smiling, reflecting, swaying to the beat, closing your eyes and breathing slowly. All of these reactions are contrary to what is often expected of us from societal norms, social media, and the everyday pressures of life. And that’s exactly why the music of Father Sky exists. To break away from the city, get back to nature, to be ok with solitude and silence, and allow your heart to be open.

These original compositions by pianist, vocalist, composer Anthony Deutsch are largely inspired by his intrinsic need to have a relationship with nature. We all share that need as humans, but Deutsch nurtures it instead of burying it beneath an ocean of concrete, automobiles, and screens. Whether it’s hiking in the woods, camping, or just going for long walks along Lake Michigan, the beauty of nature flows through him and is transcribed into the lyrical heart songs of Father Sky.

The tracks on Father Sky vary from catchy, fast-paced jazz charts to slow, emotive, and easy ballads. This range of motion and texture mimics the seasons, changes in weather, and the rich variety of life. There’s a boundless and joyful sense of hope and wonder in Deutsch’s lyrics that is infectious, like seeing someone smiling and laughing and instinctively responding in kind. It’s a heartwarming experience that stems from the energy of three musicians playing in a room together.

The jazz trio of Deutsch on piano/vocals, bass from John Christensen, and drums by Devin Drobka is a powerful combination of seasoned musicians. Each member listens, clearly knowing and understanding when to make room for the other. It’s a remarkably light yet full sounding record, unburdened by frivolous complexities or studio embellishments.

Speaking on the sound of Father Sky, Deutsch says, “Some of my favorite music is that of birds in a park or natural space—Bach is nice, too. Each moment in this life is an opportunity to find inspiration. This does not requisite sonic complexion. Sound and its absence are of the same origin.”

It’s that approach that informs all of the decisions of Father Sky as he navigates a world in need of balance—in need of peace, solitude, and mindfulness. The record is a retreat in and of itself, a beautiful escape into a safe space that feels familiar, organic. It’s a reminder to get back to nature and take a long breath of fresh air. We could all use a breather.
