Cloud Castles
Emotional scores from Ukrainian composer Heinali (DAA-026)
When was the last time you sat down and stared up at the clouds? That precious time to let your mind wander often gets left behind. But there is value in being alone with your thoughts. Free from distraction, our minds travel to peaceful places, painful memories, hopeful dreams.
Cloud Castles (DAA-026) provides a beautiful soundscape for navigating the intricacies of a heavy heart. Oleh Shpudeiko, a Ukrainian music composer and sound-artist who records as Heinali utilizes ambient drones, slow and stirring strings, and dreamy synthesizers on this focused EP of emotional scores.
A post of support from a mutual friend on twitter shortly after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine led TLL founder and creative director Daniel Holter to the music of Heinali. Holter was able to connect directly with Shpudeiko as the composer was attempting to relocate his studio.
Wanting to support independent musicians on the ground in such profoundly difficult circumstances, and upon watching a video of Heinali performing an improvised set in a bomb shelter, we thought that his talents and aesthetic would fit perfectly within our Dancing About Architecture label.
The musical drones on Cloud Castles contain flowing movement while retaining a stillness and marked serenity. By using swells and slow shifts in dynamics, tracks such as “Aurora Blooms” feel like coming up for air after holding your breath underwater.
Perfect for contemplation, tragic tears, or touching stories, these four tracks can cover a lot of emotional territory by eliminating a few distractions.
